The Essentials of a Great Quiz Host
At Get Social, we believe the host is the heartbeat of every quiz. You might have the most brilliantly written questions, a stunning venue, and a top-notch sound system, but if your host isn't up to scratch? You risk the energy falling flat.
Whether you're hosting a pub quiz, company social, birthday bash or branded event, a great host turns a quiz from a list of questions into an unforgettable experience. And if you want your players laughing, competing, and already asking when the next one is — it starts with you.
So, what exactly makes a great quiz host? Here are the essential skills and tips that we bring to every Get Social event — and how you can level up your hosting game too.
1. Know Your Role: You're a Host and a Performer
You're not just reading questions — you're leading the room.
Great hosts set the tone from the get-go. That doesn't mean being overly loud or cheesy (unless you're aiming for intentionally cheesy, which can work!), but it does mean showing up with confidence, clarity, and presence.
Tips:
- Use a strong, clear voice (practice with a mic if you're using one)
- Smile! It warms the room instantly
- Own your space — stand tall, make eye contact, and keep your body language open
- Remember: people will follow your lead. If you're calm, fun, and engaged — they will be too
2. Be Prepared (Then Be Flexible)
Winging it never goes well. The best quiz hosts know their material and how to adapt when the unexpected happens.
Before the event:
- Read through all questions and answers
- Familiarise yourself with any visual/audio content
- Know the event schedule and key transitions
- Check your tech — nothing risks killing the vibe quicker than a dodgy laptop-to-projector connection
But… be ready to improvise! Someone spills a drink, a round overruns, the microphone breaks — stuff happens. Keep calm, handle it with humour, and steer things back on track.
3. Keep It Pacey
A good quiz flows. A great quiz hums with energy. Slow pacing can really bring it down.
Long gaps between questions, unclear instructions, or over-explaining rules can lose your audience fast.
Hosting tips for pace:
- Time each round — aim for around 12–15 minutes max, and know how long each question needs. If most teams have stopped discussing their answer, move to the next question! You can always give the trickier questions extra time to even things out.
- Use up-beat music and chat to fill gaps — an auto fader helps with this, or just fade music up and down as needed. Skipping to another song is a great refresh of energy between questions.
- Move swiftly through scoring rounds and structure the answer reveals so the answer comes at the end: "The capital of Sweden is… Stockholm" rather than "What city is the capital of Sweden? Stockholm." This keeps the tension up and lets players shout out their correct answers.
4. Read the Room
Every crowd is different. Your job is to read the energy and adjust your hosting style accordingly.
Is the group competitive and sharp? Keep it snappy and challenging. Are they more social and silly? Add banter, bonus points, and audience interaction.
Hosting is a two-way street. If something's not landing — change it up! Shorten a round, drop in a joke, or add a team challenge or spot-prize. Flexibility is your best friend.
5. Handle Cheating with Charm
Yes, phones will come out. People will try to whisper-Google that one elusive answer. It happens.
Instead of becoming the fun police, address it with humour. Set the tone early and keep it light. At Get Social, we even include fun forfeits or bonus points for wrong-but-hilarious answers — it keeps the vibe fun and fair.

6. Make It Personal
People love to feel seen. Mention team names, celebrate funny answers, and shout out a particularly clever guess. It adds warmth and keeps people engaged.
Bonus points for:
- Specific references to the group or company
- Local jokes or nods to the venue
- Tailored questions that show you've done your homework
This is one of the biggest reasons clients return to Get Social — our hosts connect with the room, not just quiz it.
7. Leave on a High
The end of a quiz should feel like a finale — not a fizzle.
Wrap up with energy: announce winners with drama (in ascending order), hand out any prizes with applause, and thank everyone for playing.
The winner reveal is a pivotal moment — sometimes it's a climactic tie-break (a blessing for a host), but if not, remember that when you reveal the runner-up, you also reveal the winner, so make this announcement count! We normally go with the tried and tested "In second place, with 35 points is…, which means that tonight's Social Quiz Club winner is…"
If possible, keep music playing as people exit, invite them to stay for a drink, and chat with each team before they go. A strong finish sticks in people's minds — and makes your event one they'll want to revisit.
Final Thoughts: Hosting Is an Art (But You Can Learn It)
Hosting might look effortless, but great hosts work hard behind the scenes to make it feel effortless. And when you get it right? The payoff is huge.
You're not just asking questions — you're creating memories and bringing people together. That's what we do at Get Social, and we'd love to help you do the same.
